Mount Salvation Baptist Church was founded in 1879 at the residence of Brother Moses and Hattie Pelham, in Pelham Town, VA. Prayer and praise services were held in the homes of Brother Washington Jones, Bonaparte Moten, Horace Shelton and Harrison King. Their prayers for a more stable place to worship became a reality when Brother Pelham purchased the present plot of land which the first church was erected in 1887, and officially established by Reverend Cyrus Carter of Lincolnville, VA, assisted by Sister Julia Bolden Porter.
The church served as the area school later becoming the John M. Langston School. Reverend Joseph Matthews was called as the first Pastor and in 1890; Reverend Albert Catlett became the second Pastor.
Many who accepted Christ as their Savior were baptized in the creek at Thrift Town, known today as Lee Highway and Kirkwood Road. Others were baptized at the lower end of North Edison Street. During the Pastorate of Reverend Chinnor Coleman, D.D. (1905-1917), the building was enlarged and a baptismal pool was installed.
During many years of service we have been blessed with several ministers all contributing greatly to the growth of our church. Most remembered are Reverend N. R. Richardson (1931-1966), Reverend John B. Howard (1967-1978), Reverend Fred L. Pretty (1979-1997), Reverend Joseph Smith (2001-2004) and Interim Pastor, Reverend Richard O. Green, Sr., (2005-2006).
We have had many great leaders, Deacons and laymen. Deacon William Pelham, grandson of Brother Moses Pelham, served the longest in history as a deacon having been installed in 1925. He was named Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Deacons and Father of the church. At the age of 103, Deacon Pelham was called home.
Reverend Elias Wells Fitcheard, Jr., was elected as the Pastor of Mount Salvation Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 27, 2005. He was installed as the Pastor on May 21, 2006. Pastor Fitcheard accepted the call from Mount Salvation to be the Pastor and Teacher of Gods Choice. Under his leadership members have weekly extensive Bible Study with powerful, enlightening and enriching teaching. Under his leadership the Mt. Salvation Praise Team and Liturigical Dance Ministry was established. His vision is to win souls for Christ and teach the Plan of Salvation. He plans to establish a strong Outreach Ministry and growth within the current church ministries through knowledge and understanding of God’s word. Rev. Fitcheard resigned April 24, 2016.
